La Palma is, together with Tenerife, La Gomera and El Hierro, one of the islands that make up the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. It has more than 81,000 inhabitants, occupying the 5th place both in population and in extension. La Palma is also the second highest Canarian island, with the Roque de los Muchachos at 2,426 meters.

This island has been a Biosphere Reserve since 2002, and is the third Canarian island to achieve this award after Lanzarote and El Hierro. In the centre you can also find the Caldera Taburiente National Park, where you can find the largest volcanic crater in the world.
